Bringing up the name of Sherlock Holmes as a movie material is kinda guarantee the movie will be added into most people’s watchlist, but one things that catch my interest when I watch the trailer is how fun this movie can be in the hands of Millie Bobby Brown as Sherlock Holmes’s little sister, and the star-studded cast.

So without further ado, here are some of my thoughts about this movie.

Concept & Character

As you can also see from the trailer, as the youngest of three Holmes siblings, Enola grew up mostly with her mother, Eudoria Holmes. So when all of a sudden she disappeared, Enola is determined to find her, with or without the help of her famous older brother, Sherlock Holmes. Her journey to find her mother is also becoming a journey for her to find out her own path and purpose in life.

While solely focused on Enola’s journey as the main character (which is unexpectedly charming enough to keep my eyes peeled to the screen throughout the movie), this movie also give a proper amount of highlight to its supporting characters, adding the charm of this movie even further to see the bittersweet relationship between Enola and Sherlock, or the cute interaction between Enola and Tewkesbury. If you expect some seriously intriguing mystery-detective kind of movie that got you thinking hard and guessing about who’s the bad guy like The Murder on The Orient Express or Knives Out just because it got ‘Holmes’ in its title, you might be disappointed, but if you’re looking for some fun, coming of age journey with some mystery-solving games at its core, I think you’re gonna enjoy this movie.

I also enjoy the storytelling method this film takes, and its way of breaking the 4th wall by making Enola being interactive with the audience. It reminds me of Deadpool, and it was fun.

Art, Act & Audio

I love the vibes, visual, and scoring arrangement in this movie, but I have to admit that one thing that truly stand out is Millie’s performance. You will fall to the contagious yet witty smile of hers, find yourself admiring her courage and spontaneity, but then again, every time Tewkesbury, played by Louis Partridge — our newest Englishman sweetheart — showed up on the screen, he is quite a scene stealer.

What Do I Get?

Communication is the key.

After seeing the movie, one question that came to my mind is; why exactly, Eudoria have to left all of a sudden without explaining things to Enola? Since looking at how intelligent she is at perceiving things and the bond they have, I think everything will be much simpler if the mother and daughter just sit together to talk about the situation, things Eudoria have to do, and planned their future plans. Instead of just going missing — which of course will provoke others to look for her — and force Enola to live her life under her brother conservative rule.

Even though I need to put some disclaimer here, this movie is based on novel The Enola Holmes Mysteries by Nancy Springer, and I don’t read the book, so there might be further details explained there.

Bravery open up the door of a new path

All of her life, Enola grew up in the safety of her well-known environment, but that doesn’t make her afraid to go out and challenge herself to the unknown world ahead of her for the sake of important things to her. Even though the process might not be easy, but the journey give her a better understanding about herself, and what she want in life.

Overall, I highly recommend Enola Holmes for those who wants to enjoy a fun and fresh movie for the weekend with some mystery-solving as the theme, and of course, some eye candy *wink*
But if you’re looking for more brain-wrecking experience kind of movie, you might want to look somewhere else.

Overall score : 8.5 / 10
